![]() ![]() Video encoders attempt to “predict” change from one frame to the next. Professional-grade video compression software like ffmpeg allows explicit control.Īlso read: What You Need to Know About Video Encoding Interframe Prediction (P-frames and B-frames) ![]() For consumers, the frequency of I-frames is often determined indirectly by the “quality” setting in the encoding software. A bandwidth-optimized application would insert I-frames as infrequently as possible without breaking the video stream. ![]() However, if I-frames are too far apart, the accuracy of the video’s predictive frames will slowly degrade into unintelligibility. ![]() The farther apart the I-frames, the smaller the video file can be. In codecs that use predictive frames like H.264, I-frames are periodically shown to “refresh” the data stream by setting a new reference frame. It’s less efficient but produces a higher-quality raw image file. Because there are no predictive frames, the only compression that can be achieved is by compressing the image within a single frame. This encoding often takes places in the YCbCr color space, which separates luminosity data from color data, allowing motion and color changes to be encoded separately.įor non-predictive codecs like DV and Motion JPEG, that’s where we stop. They are still compressed by an image compression algorithm like JPEG. Because I-frames use no predictive data, the compressed image contains all the data used to display the I-frame. I-frames are compressed independently, in the same way still images are saved. The algorithm has an idea of where the image “starts” (the first I-frame) and where the image “ends” (the second I-frame), and it uses partial data to encode a good guess, leaving out all the redundant static pixels that aren’t necessary to create the image. The B-frame looks at the P-frame and the next I-frame and “averages” the motion across those frames. In the above example, it needs to track how the dots move across the frame, but Pac-Man can stay where he is. P frames need only store the visual information that is unique to the P-frame. B-frames are bi-directionally predicted, using data from both the last P-frame and the next I-frame. P-frames are predicted based on how the image changes from the last I-frame. Every I-frame contains all the data it needs to represent an image. This interframe prediction encoding is what’s responsible for digital video compression’s unnerving artifacts: parts of an old image moving with incorrect action because something in the encoding has gone haywire. It doesn’t make sense to encode the background image for every frame: instead, you can encode it once, then refer back to it until you know the video changes. Imagine, for example, a one-minute shot of a character’s face slowly changing expression. By encoding redundant data a minimum number of times, file size can be reduced. Video compression algorithms look for spatial and temporal redundancies. While it’s no longer the newest video compression format, it still provides a sufficiently detailed example for explaining big-picture concepts about video compression. In this post we’re using H.264 as the archetypal compression standard. The additional dimension and time means different mathematical and logical techniques are applied to the video file to reduce the size while maintaining video quality. Modern video compression algorithms aren’t the same as the image compression algorithms you might be familiar with. ![]() ![]() In the state of New York the only grounds for divorce were adultery. Schwartz soon became interested in obtaining a divorce so that he could marry Charleen. A native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and a 1933 graduate of Wellesley College, she was taking graduate courses at the University of Michigan when Schwartz met her that fall in a math class. Schwartz's second marriage was to Charleen Eshleman, daughter of Charles and Lillian Eshleman, who'd had a previous short-lived marriage during college. During Schwartz's last year at Columbia the couple lived in a large apartment at the corner of 102nd Street and West End Avenue, Dora's father, Max Zaslavsky, and sister Fay sharing their apartment. They traveled together to Europe the summer of 1932, spending time in Paris's artist community. An accomplished pianist, Dora taught at the Neighborhood Music School (later the Manhattan School of Music), staying behind in New York City when Schwartz returned to Ann Arbor to start his third year of college. She was a Russian-Jewish immigrant who had come to this country as an infant. Schwartz married Dora Zaslavsky on September 12, 1927. When he felt inadequate he would "search for evil in others in order to feel superior." He writes, "I had been justifying my existence by what I was going to achieve." Only after discovering Catholicism did he realize that it wasn't about him but that he was an instrument of God. In college he had to be at the head of his class, he had to make Phi Beta Kappa, he had to outdo everyone else in everything. In writing the story of his conversion, Schwartz describes himself as having been brought up to think that "the best was none too good for me." When he was studying piano what he said he wanted "was to be a god, to have everyone adore me, beautiful women particularly swooning all about me, overwhelmed by my sensitive soul." When he finally accepted that he wasn't going to be successful in his ambition to become a great pianist he went to college with the goal of becoming a great research scientist. He received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Michigan, not from the University of Chicago as his linked-obituary states. Simon was in his last year of medical school, eventually becoming a psychiatrist and then a Trappist monk. That spring he held a small class on Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophy for three friends: William Gorman, Kenneth "Bud" Simon, and one other. Schwartz spent the 1933–34 academic year back in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan taking graduate courses. Schwartz's thesis was a "dissertation on Poetics with special application to music." Schwartz received his master's degree in 1931, his doctorate in 1933 under Richard McKeon (with a fellowship for 1932–33). That same fall he entered Columbia University to pursue a doctorate in philosophy. A lengthy article he wrote on musical criticism was accepted during this time by Hound & Horn for publication in the fall of 1930. īack in New York City Schwartz frequented Greenwich Village, making friends with literary people there, with the thought of becoming a writer. He went on to medical school at the University of Michigan, dropping out after one semester despite having very high grades, disliking the emphasis on memorization. When the port of Agoo was eventually closed, the Japanese would leave, but not before teaching the locals about fish farming, rice cultivation, deerskin tanning, duck breeding, and weapon production. When the Spanish closed the Philippines to foreign trade, Agoo's function as an ancient port began to deteriorate. The principal export from the region was deer pelts, which were shipped to Japan. Traders at Agoo, after all, would have access to a larger number of people, and it was closer to China and Japan. This was due to the presence of a Japanese colony. In her book " Pangasinan 1572–1800", Rosario Mendoza-Cortes states that La Union specifically Agoo was the region's principal port of call for Japanese and Chinese traders, with Sual, Pangasinan, as the only other contender.
